9 Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid For Skincare

WHAT IS HYALURONIC ACID?

While the name might sound scary, harsh, and synthetic, Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is actually a natural molecule produced in our bodies!

Acid might make you think of burning and dehydrating, but Hyaluronic Acid is actually incredibly effective in doing the complete opposite - soothing, and hydrating.

This amazing little molecule forms part of our skin’s own NMF’s (Natural Moisturising Factors) and can retain up to 1000 times its own weight in moisture!

It’s incredibly useful for a variety of skin types, so let’s dive into its benefits and see what it can do for your skin!

1. HYDRATION

The obvious one we have mentioned already, but it is worth repeating. Hyaluronic Acid is great at providing the skin with intense hydration by drawing moisture from the surroundings, once applied to your skin.

Hyaluronic Acid molecules penetrate the layers of skin cells, boosting your natural Hyaluronic Acid levels and binding water to the skin cells. Targeted moisture that penetrates deep into the layers of skin rather than just the surface.

This results in visible improvements in dry skin, oily skin, and mature skin.

Say goodbye to cracked skin, fine lines, dry skin patches and oily skin patches and enjoy radiant looking skin!

MOISTURE RETENTION

Hyaluronic Acid is a hygroscopic molecule and a great humectant for the skin. Big words for a simple concept.

Hyaluronic Acid penetrates the layers of skin, attracts moisture from the environment and holds onto it providing great, long lasting hydration to your skin cells. This is what sets Hyaluronic Acid apart from products that provide only temporary hydration.

2. ANTI-AGING PROPERTIES

Younger skin is able to retain water well, but once we get older we lose the ability to maintain a balanced amount of moisture. Supplement your skincare routine with a great hyaluronic acid product and slow down the aging process!

Sun exposure can also be a major culprit in our skin’s aging. Using Hyaluronic Acid helps build up layers of protection and restores the moisture drained by excessive sun exposure.

3. GOOD FOR COMBINATION SKIN

Hyaluronic acid is suitable and beneficial for all skin types but it's particularly useful for people with combination skin.

Combination skin provides the challenge of balancing areas of dry and oily skin making it difficult to find the right products.

Cleansing improperly to tackle oily skin tends to dry out dry skin patches further and moisturising the dry patches worsens oily patches leading to shine and breakouts.

Hyaluronic acid is the solution! It absorbs into the skin and draws varying amounts of moisture from the environment to provide perfectly balanced hydration across oily and dry patches.

4. ENHANCE YOUR LIPID BARRIER

The best way to explain the lipid barrier is by describing it as a wall.

The skin has a protective lipid barrier that helps skin stay supple and youthful. Imagine your skin cells are the bricks in the wall, and the mortar, which is holding the bricks together, is your lipid barrier.

3 Crucial Functions of the Lipid Barrier

  • Trapping water molecules to prevent the loss of moisture in the skin.
  • The lipid barrier is highly impermeable and is designed to prevent environmental chemicals and biological irritants from entering the skin.
  • Prevents NMFs being stripped from the skin: Our skin has its own Natural Moisturizing Factors that are important for long term skincare and ensuring your skin’s tone is radiant and its texture is smooth.

With age, this barrier can become compromised and start to perform less of its crucial functions effectively as cells and lipids lose moisture, collagen and become damaged from exposure to the elements.

Hyaluronic acid can help slow the deterioration of this layer and can help treat damaged lipid layers by providing the moisture that the skin craves and needs to function.

5. STIMULATE SKIN CELL PRODUCTION

Healthy skin is happy skin. While hyaluronic acid does not directly improve skin regeneration it helps to improve the condition of your skin and it’s protective layers..

This combination of cared for skin gives your skin’s natural renewal pattern a helping hand, by providing all the right conditions for skin cell renewal.

Skin cell turnover can also be encouraged by other keratolytic agents using an ingredient such as Retinol (Vitamin A) or Azelaic Acid

Having evenly moisturised, healthy skin can also slow down skin cell degeneration.

6. HELP REDUCE FINE LINES & CREATE SMOOTHER SKIN

Applying Hyaluronic Acid, as we’ve mentioned, ensures that your skin is hydrated and retains moisture.

The salt component of Hyaluronic Acid, known as Sodium Hyaluronate, is a smaller molecule which penetrates deeper into the skin to help the dermis with hydration.

This results in healthier looking skin, with a reduction in wrinkles and fine lines that are associated with our inability to retain as much moisture within our skin as we age, or as a result of the sun, and specific habits(such as smoking).

The added deep hydration also creates smooth and tight skin.

7. PIGMENTATION

Hyaluronic acid can help you reduce pigmentation and blemishes associated with age when used in combination with brighteners.

A common cause of hyperpigmentation is when damage to the skin caused by excessive sun exposure occurs.

Vitamin C is one antioxidant that combats dark spots caused by sun exposure. It helps prevent melanin production, which can help brighten the skin and reduce pigmentation.

When pairing Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid, the moisture Hyaluronic Acid provides allows active brighteners to function more effectively - meaning that it’s more effective in reducing the effects of skin pigmentation.

Boosting moisture and brightening skin tone were exactly the reasons behind combining Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid in our formulation Wow-wow Wonder, check it out!

8. HELPS HEAL WOUNDS FASTER

Hyaluronic Acid is also incredibly effective in treating wounds.

When applied, it regulates levels of inflammation and drives signals from the body to create more blood vessels in the affected area.

Applying Hyaluronic Acid to a wound can reduce pain and decrease the size of the wound over time.

It also has antibacterial properties so it can reduce the risk of infection when applied to open wounds.

Hyaluronic Acid is effective in treating gum disease and handling inflammation effectively with mouth wounds too!
